Trivia[ | ]

  • The cocaine pill bottles for the law's associated image are labeled as "Cocaine Hydrochlorate". This is incorrect, and they should instead be labelled as "Cocaine Hydrochloride".
    • The -ide suffix is used because the anion (chlorine) is monoatomic. The Hydro- prefix indicates the presence of a hydrogen ion.
    • "Cocaine Muriate" would also be acceptable - muriate being an archaic name for hydrochloride that was still in use in 1886, when The Last Autumn takes place.
  • Cocaine hydrochloride is a salt formed by reacting cocaine (a weak base) with hydrochloric acid (a strong acid). This is the most common form of cocaine seen in the real world, although cocaine nitrate and cocaine sulphate also exist. This is done in order to increase the solubility of the drug so it may be more easily absorbed into the body.
